“유자(有子)는 말하기를 <그 사람됨이 효제스러우면서 웃사람 범하기를 좋아하는 자는 드물다. 웃사람 범하기를 좋아하지 않으면서 작란을 좋아하는 자는 있지 않다. 군자는 근본에 힘쓰나니, 극본이 서야 도가 생겨난다. 효제는 인을 행하는 근본이다. >라고 하였다”는 구절입니다.

The philosopher Yu said, ‘They are few who, being filial and fraternal, are fond of offending against their superiors. There have been none, who, not liking to offend against their superiors, have been fond of stirring up confusion.

The superior man bends his attention to what is radical. That being estabilished, all practical courses naturally grow up. Filial piety and fraternal submission! –are they not the root of all benevolent actions? ‘

유자는 공자의 제자로서 13살(일설에는 33살) 아래라고 합니다. 풍모가 공자님과 비슷하여, 공자님이 돌아가신 후에 제자들이 그를 사모하여 스승으로 모시려고 했다고 합니다.
