Chap. III.  The master said, ‘Fine words and an insinuating appearance are seldom associated with true virture.’

巧: ‘skill in workmanship;’ then, ‘skill,’ cleverness,’ generally, and sometimes with a   bad meaning, as here, = ‘artful,’  ‘hypocritical.’

令: ‘a law,’  ‘an order,’  also ‘good,’ and here like 巧, with a bad meaning, = ‘pretending to be good.’

色: ‘the manifestation of feelings made in the colour of the countenance,’ is here used for the appearance generally.

공자는 말씀하시기를 ‘듣기좋게 꾸미는 말과 보기좋게 꾸미는 낯빛에는 仁德이 드물다.’고 하셨다.

巧는 좋게하는 것이다. 令은 잘하는 것이다. 말을 듣기 좋게하고 얼굴빛을 잘하여 겉으로만 꾸며서 사람을 기쁘게 하는 데 힘쓰면 인욕이 생겨나서 본심의 덕이 없어진다. 聖人은 표현이 박절하지 않으므로, 드물다고 표현하였으니 전혀 없음을 알 수 있다.
